On one hand, The Game definitely misses Dr. Dre as he confesses repeatedly on his latest album. On the other, he doesn't.
The production is not as good as The Documentary, but it's not bad. On his last album, I said it shined despite him not because of him. Here we start to see things trend the other way - Game himself is carrying the album and not simply relying on impeccable production. Byron Crawford sums it up nicely: "He's still up to his same old name-dropping bullshit, but he's gotten much better at it which is what really saves the album."
The lead single is It's Okay (One Blood). The second single, Let's Ride, is a Scott Storch banger that is good, but more reminiscent of his first album. He has a few decent lines, but mostly forgettable. His third single is likely another Scott Storch track, Too Much, also featuring Nate Dogg. I like this track.
Other standout tracks for me: Looking at You, with no-name Urban EP Pope doing his best Dre impression (and doing it fairly well). Remedy, produced by Just Blaze, where Game's flow actually reminds me a lot of Tupac. Scream On 'Em has an ok beat courtesy of Swizz Beatz, who I've never been a big fan of, but Game brings it on this. Game raps alongside Busta in an ode to Dre on the title track. I'm also a big fan of Ol' English, a chiller track produced by Hi Tek.
Of course, there are certainly a number of forgettable tracks - topping the list for me would be Around the World featuring Jamie Foxx.
All in all, The Game's second album, Doctor's Advocate, is pretty good. The Game has improved immensely since his last album, and this is his coming out party. It's not a classic, but it's clear after listening that Game was more than just a flash in the pan.
