OneNote SP1

Most of you will know that I'm a huge, huge fan and advocate of OneNote. If you use it, especially if you have a Tablet PC, you absolutely must get the OneNote SP1 preview (more details here).

There are plenty of other (more subtle) changes, but it adds what I consider three very important features in terms of Ink:

  • Scratch-out gesture
  • 'Real' erasing (a la Journal)
  • Customizable pens

In the past, one of my main complaints was that the Ink support just felt 'tacked on'. I don't feel that way with this release and in general I find myself enjoying the pen within OneNote much more than I did in the past. (In the past, I tended to use the keyboard whenever possible for just those reasons).

This release also adds a rudimentary import API (or, as Don put it, a Black Hole API). It will get more useful down the road once we have the export API, but it's a start nonetheless.

Thanks guys - and keep up the good work!

Also, I'm sure most of you are already readers of Chris Pratley's (excellent!) blog, but two more OneNote-related blogs have joined the fray (here and here). Subscribed to both.

(One note of caution: my notebook got corrupted somewhere along the lines when I dragged a section around. I couldn't reproduce it, but especially if you have important / unrecoverable notes in there, I strongly recommend a backup before you install, etc. But you already knew that.... )
