Well, it's technically my spring break, so I decided to go on vacation while I had the chance. We're down in Miami this week.
Some random observations about my trip so far:
AirTrain is ok, but getting there from the city sucks. I should have known better. Next time, I'm taking a cab. At least we didn't end up in the storage yard.
South Beach is like NYC mixed with a little bit of Cancun. It's trendy, over-priced and yet terribly cheesy at time. And the roads are numbered. I feel right at home.
I think NJGUIDO.COM is throwing a party down here. Or at least it sure looks that way.
What pisses me off more is that all the drinks down here seem to be odd figures, like $7.95. Why not $8.00? Who the hell wants to worry about a bunch of small change?
Worse yet, they automatically add a 15% or 18% gratuity to most drinks. This means that the $7.95 drink is really $9.14. Mind you, it's not the price I'm worried about - I'm used to expensive drinks - but this means you have 86 cents in your pocket instead of a single nickel. Of course, it's plenty good for buying the next drink I guess.
The added gratuity brings up a classic Larry David moment: do you tip on top of that? Especially if you're already being charged 18%, do you tip the extra 2%? (If you don't get this, go watch the Curb Your Enthusiasm season finale).
Two words: plastic cups. They suck. Don't serve me a drink in a plastic cup ever again.
One final thought: I like vacation. Maybe I'll just stay.
