FDNY going high-tech - with Tablet PCs?

CBS News just ran a story about the FDNY going high-tech. As you may know, there was a lot of backlash after 9/11 because of the very primitive command boards they used. In conjuction with researchers from NYU, they will be deploying new computer command centers, using "touch screen computers" to track personnel with interactive, zooming floor plans.

There were a number of prototypes showed, and most appeared to be touch screen. One of them - which they mentioned as probably the first phase to be deployed - was a Toshiba Tablet PC.

I couldn't find any coverage on CBS News. Newsday and Firehouse.com both have articles, but unfortunately neither get too detailed with the hardware being used.

Although I think in this case, touch screen might be a better idea than using a Tablet. Imagine if they lose the pen on the way to the fire... :)
