More on Tablet PCs

A week or two back I blogged about the Tablet PCs I have been considering, and Jesse and Rob had some good feedback.

I recently stumbled on the Acer TravelMate C110, the first new Centrino Tablet PC. I know it's Acer, but the specs are quite impressive: 900mhz Intel M processor (the equivalent of a 1.5ghz), 512MB RAM, 40GB HD, convertible, and only a bit over 3 lbs.

Not to mention integrated 802.11b, USB 2.0, FireWire, and an included external DVD/CD-RW drive.

Perhaps most impressive - with a 100$ manufacturer's rebate, it can be had for about $2000. That's even more impressive when you consider a standard IBM or Toshiba notebook with comparable specs would run somewhere around $1700. And this is the more expensive model, with the external drive and a bigger HD.

I've heard good (albeit sometimes mixed) reviews on the first series of Tablet PCs. Does anyone out there have this, or have any experience with this? It almost seems to good to be true :)

The main downsides in my mind right now are the average battery life (3 hours) and the 10.4" screen, the latter of which I can easily write off for being an ultra-portable.

I'm looking to use this for school, and not intending it to be a desktop replacement. I want something as portable as possible.

I was struggling with the decision before. I really had a hard time justifying a thousand dollar premium and a such an inferior machine to get the Tablet. For a few hundred bucks and comparable specs, it might be hard to resist!

I guess I'll have to get up to Best Buy or something this weekend. Uh-oh.
