I've said this from the start - laziness is the foundation of computer science. We program because we're lazy. Otherwise I would just be a mathematician. But I why do work when I can delegate the work off to a machine? All the best programmers I know are lazy, for precisely the reasons that Eli has discussed.
After all, a little extra work now can usually pay many dividends over time.
