The TSA has amended the ban on liquids, aerosols and gels today (via Julie).

There are two major changes:

  1. Travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag.
  2. After clearing security, travelers can now bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area on-board aircraft.

Liquids in containers of 3 ounces or less may be carried in your carry-on bag so long as they are placed in a clear, one-quart plastic bag.

Bruce Schneier hasn't posted about this yet, but it seems like there's actually some thought put into this and that it's a sensible security measure.

I'm truly convinced that the terrorists never actually planned to blow up planes with gels - they're just doing things to totally disrupt our air travel.  Next they're going to wire explosives into the fabric on their pants, and we'll all have to fly without pants.
